131 a: Have You Met Mrs. Jones – Natural 9

In this lesson I’m practicing playing the natural 9 on every chord of the standard Have you met Miss Jones?. I’m using a displaced quarter note triplet rhythm starting on the 2nd 8th note triplet of beat one. After being able to play this exercise easily on your instrument, sing along to the recording as a way of deepening your understanding of the sound of the natural nine. You can sing along, think of the chord, the interval (9), and visualize the fingering on your instrument. This is an excellent way to improve both your theoretical knowledge and your ear. Below is also an mp3 of the play along with the 9s sounding on each chord.

Mrs.Jones 120 bpm
Mrs. Jones 80 bpm
Mrs. Jones – with the natural 9 played on each chord.

Singing along to this video or a recording of you playing the exercise I call “passive ear training”. It’s just pitch matching and so is very easy overall, but very effective. If you spend the afternoon or several sessions singing the 9 along with this recording or your own, you will see improvements in your ear.

~Enjoy!
