133: Singing all tensions on a Dominant 7th chord.

I came up with this easy ear training exercise today in which you sing each tension over a dominant 7th chord from easiest to hardest. In this order natural 9, natural 13, sharp 11, sharp 9, sharp 5, flat 9.

I sing the exercise in one key but I say the notes out loud in all 12 keys while imagining the fingerings on my instrument. That is, in the key of C I think D for the 9, A for the 13, F# for the #11, D# for the #9, G# for the #5, and C# for the b9. For this exercise the visualization of the fingerings and the singing are what is most important. I don’t actually say the letters out loud when practicing this by myself. I just think of the fingering for the notes I’m singing. You can say the letters out loud just to confirm that you’re thinking clearly about the pitches if it helps. I use enharmonic spellings for all these pitches, just the note name that I find the easiest to access the fingering from.

Enjoy!

Sing along to this – 80 bpm w triplet metronome
Sing along #2 – no metronome
Sing along #3 – 40 bpm
