Lesson 138: 6 Bar Tune

Here’s a simple progression with a chromatic melody. It’s in the key of G starting and targets iii minor (maj7) and I using substitute secondary dominants. I became interested writing really short form tunes by both Monk (Light Blue) and Peter Schlamb who has written a ton of compelling short form songs.

Short form tune in G

Below is a short video of me playing the piece “Roll” on EWI – I looped the bass part and 3rds and 7ths of each chord on my loop station and played the melody and improvised over the form – I like playing the tune, it’s easy and has a nice cyclical feel due to the 6 bar phrase and the harmonic rhythm.
