136: Woody and You

Here’s a transcription of my tenor sax solo from the Alliance album (2020).

This is over the chord changes to Woody and You (Dizzy Gillespie) on a contrafact I wrote called Woods. In the transcription I tried to notate what concepts and/or scales I was using.

After a chord, if you see B – add 9, this would imply the use of a tetrad or 4 note cell which I used a lot of throughout the solo.

Another concept I used a couple times was cycle 5 melodies through various scales.

The rest of the melodic material is pretty standard coming mainly from melodic minor, major, lydian, dorian and half whole diminished scale contexts.

There is one short use of G harmonic minor (the six mode which is a form of Eb major 7 with #9 and #11) over Eb Maj 7.
