127 Amazing Scale Warm Up!

I discovered this warm up with some help from my friend Peter Schlamb. I did if for a few days before a gig and was shocked at how it changed my entire time feel and attention to the groove. I modified the exercise to facilitate learning and hearing every single intervallic relationship within a scale that is less than an octave. Here’s the routing:

YouTube Video explanation

You pick one scale and one key.

You use a metronome or one of the mp3s below (16 note subdivision).

You only play on the 2nd and 4th 16 note (you can hold the notes slurred or legato but only attack change the note on the 2nd or 4th 16th note)

You play from each note of the scale to every other note of the scale (ascending or descending – either will give you all the intervals)

You start on the next scale degree and repeat until you’ve started on all 7 scale degrees.

I encourage you to try this for even an afternoon before a gig. Just stick to it and see what happens. I was pretty amazed after doing this only for 3 days before a gig. It was a real shift in my time feel and attention to rhythm and to the drummer.

~Enjoy!

60 BPM (only play on the 2nd and 4th 16 note)
100 BPM (only play on the 2nd and 4th 16 note)
140 BPM (only play on the 2nd and 4th 16 note)
