Here’s a blues etude that uses some different 4 note cells (tetrads) and various scales. By writing an etude you can learn to hear melody that specifically reflects an underlying concept and later improvise using the concept alone. The original melody can help you remember what concept to use and when by ear as the melody will reflect that concept. It also helps reinforce the use of space and phrasing to help you avoid the endless string of 8th notes that plagues many of us.
