In this video I offer you my advice on how to survive and thrive after college in your early 20’s. This can be a challenging time for a lot of Jazz musicians as making an income becomes a real challenge.
Here are the things I talk about in this video:
Lower Overhead Cost :
1. Learn To Budget: (Use an App).
2. Rent (Have More Roommates).
3. Food (Beans, Rice, etc. Think Healthy, Affordable, Bulk).
4. Take Every Gig For A Long While.
5. Pick Up A Part-Time Job.
6. Mantra: “Hang More = Work More”.
7. Practice All Day, Hang at Night.
8. Listen To Live Music and Sit In.
9. Go To Jam Sessions Each Week
10. Learn Your Community Tunes, Be Part Of The Tribe.
Other Things That Will Help:
1.Avoid Alcohol/Drugs (Or Moderation)
2.Exercise (Start the Habit Early).
3.Be Social (You Can Still Be Quiet).
4.Don’t Speak Poorly Of Players.
5. Find Strengths In Other Musicians.
6. Reach Out To Older Players.
7. Be Supportive Of All At The Jam.
8.Stay Off Your Phone (Turn It Off).
9. Listen To The Other Players.
10. Create An Inclusive Environment.
Lastly:
1. Book Gigs or House Concerts.
2. Sell CDs and Recordings.
3. Teach Lessons.
4. Go To College, Get A Degree.
