This lesson covers one possible pattern using the Cycle motion concept through the modes of Harmonic Major. This is a short excerpt from a new book on using 4ths and 5ths in improvisation that I’ve been working on for some time and will release in a few months. The concept is outlined in the video and pdfs below. I’ve found working on this Cycle 4 and 5 concept to be a great addition to my melodic vocabulary specifically due to it’s intervallic nature which creates interesting and surprising melodies. Try spending as much time as possible singing the material to help you internalize and audiate the material. As David Baker used to say to me, “if you can’t sing it, you can’t hear it”. This quote has haunted me my whole life and has set the bar pretty high for deeply learning new ideas.
~ Enjoy!
