This is a short melodic phrase that I wrote that includes use of the #9 on a major chord.
I often think of this sound coming from the 6th mode of harmonic minor which works nicely over a major 7 chord as a colorful alternative chord scale choice or context for melodic material. For example if the chord was C major 7 you could use the 6th mode of E harmonic minor which would give you a #9, #11 and 13 in the upper structure. The upper structure triad ends up being a Major Triad a half step below the actual root (a C triad with a B triad on top). The B triad in this example could also come from a “one diminished” substitution ( C diminished for C major) but in that example there would be no major third (E natural).
The pdf and mp3 examples below are in A Major. This will allow you to sing along with the melody for ear training and visualization. I have displaced the melody on and off the beat both in 8th notes and triplets. I find that doing this opens up the widest possibilities for integrations and use of the new idea. After singing it several hounded times or more, you should be able to hear it and begin to play it on your instrument through all 12 keys.
~ Enjoy!
