Lesson 146 Part 3: Countdown, Giant Steps, Tri-tonic

This is part 3 in my video series on Countdown.

In this lesson on Countdown we’ll continue looking at ways of thinking about, conceptualizing and improvising over Countdown.

This method uses minor triads over each chord of the progression. On the minor chords we’ll use a minor triad built off the 5th of the the chord (i.e. for E-7 we’ll use a B minor triad). On each dominant 7th chord we’ll use the minor triad built off the 5th of the chord (i.e. for F7 we’ll use a C minor triad). Lastly, on the Major 7th chords we’ll use a minor triad built off the 3rd of the chord (i.e. on Bb Major 7 we’ll use a D minor triad).

Of course you could use any triad you’d like to create your own favorite 3 note sets for each chord but overtime I have found that this concept using minor triads works very well in terms of clarity, voice leading and creativity. The video outlines the theory behind the concept on several methods to begin working on it.

~Enjoy!
