This lesson analyzes a specific phrase from John Coltrane’s improvisation on “Venus,” from Interstellar Space.

Trane utilizes the classical augmented or double augmented scale, coupling it with the interval of a perfect 4th below.
This creates 2 double augmented scales a 4th/5th apart.
I also offer another explanation using minor 7th chords descending by major 3rds.
Also, the melody can be found within the 10 note Messiaen Mode 3 (Mode of Limited Transposition No. 3) scale.
