In this short video I’m playing the nine on each chord of the song I’ve Never Been In Love Before.
You will truly get a lot out of doing this over a variety of standards, I call it “the number game”.
This vertical practice can help your ear and your mind and leads to some interesting abstract intervallic melodies.
I use mostly the natural nine on every chord including the half diminished seventh chords and occasionally I use a flat nine on a dominant seven chord that resolves a fourth away.
It’s hard to do this exercise without beginning to hear notes you want to resolve to or play and so creates quite a bit of creative back pressure which I think is important to maintain when improvising.

Singing along with this video or making your own will help you hear the 9 on every chord. I’m using mostly natural 9 on every chord. On the dominant 7th chords that resolve a fourth away I may use the b9 a few times.
