This is the last lesson outlining various ways to work on improvising over progressions like Countdown, Giant Steps, 26-2, Satellite etc.
Start by playing the 18 orders of notes for the minor triad over the progression based on the system outlined in Part 3. Basically you’ll be using a minor triad built of the 5th of the chord for minor and dominant chords (This gives you the 5th, 7th and 9th of each chord) and you’ll be using the minor triad built off the 3rd of the Major chords (giving you the 3rd, Major 7th and 9th of each chord).
By playing the 18 triadic melodies (3 orders of notes x 3 inversions) you will become very fluent in both hearing and thinking about the triads in real time over the progression. Remember that all these melodies must be memorized as using your eyes will rarely lead to hearing the material. Even if you can only play 1,3,5 in root position, doing this from memory will be more valuable. Practice singing along to a recording of the exercises to get them into your ear as well. You can use the play alongs below or use irealb if you want to practice the concept slower at first.
~Enjoy!
