In this short video lesson I explain a simple “outside” concept that Bird uses over a Blues solo that can be easily adapted to any 4 note melody derived from a minor major 7th chord (or major 7 #5 chord).
Simply by playing the melodic idea descending (or ascending) by whole steps you can create an interesting melody that is outside the changes which still sounds intelligent and melodic.
You can introduce this concept anywhere during a solo and just learn how to resolve it back into the changes you are improvising over.

Try practicing the melodic pattern using the basic outline in the pdf below. Once you can play the melody descending by whole steps starting on any note, try playing it randomly while your improvising over a progression. Learn to resolve the “free outside” pattern into a more ‘inside” melody.
