In this simple lesson I outline a 3 note cell or melody that sounds really nice over Major, Minor and Dominant 7th chords. By avoiding the 3rd and the 7th of the chord the melody becomes extremally malleable harmonically and can be used in a multitude of locations within a standard chord progression. I became interested in 2 note and 3 note “licks” from transcribing Joe Henderson who often plays short melodic ideas that sound hip and interesting to the ear. Peter Bernstein is another great musician whom I’ve taken some really nice 3 note ideas from.
