This is a one chorus Etude I wrote over Stella By Starlight for 3 of my strongest trombone students at KU. Here I’m joined by Aidan Hamer who is a fantastic trombone player at KU – it’s hard to imagine playing this on trombone!
The etude covers several different concepts including several be-bop clichés, Barry Harris chromatic passing tones, triadic melodies in closed and open (spread) position, harmonic minor scale use, whole tone scale with chromatic passing tones, tetrad (4 note cell melodies), sequential ideas, cycle 5 melody, use of large intervals and classical augmented scale use over Bb major 7.
